Restraint System
Restraint system integration constitutes the selection, arrangement and cooridnation of the restraint system components, the power and acceleration which affect the passenger, and its effect is to minimize the risk of injury.
Air bags, safety-belts, as well as construction components and systems which primarily have another role to fulfill other than that of passenger support can still be considered restraint system components. The steering column and steering wheel, instrument-display, seat and door covering etc. are categorised in a secondary group. An important function is fulfilled by the sensor which must recognise a collision and release the direct restraint system, safety bag and air bag on time.
The selection of components is done on the basis of systematic performance appraisal and project end conditions. The configuration takes into account the geometric structural conditions and requirements which must be complied with e.g. the legal requirements on various markets. The setting of the restraint system is aimed at adjusting the components in relation to one another so as to minimise the forces impacting on the passenger and thereby minimising the risk of personal injury.
In light thereof, different tools are used in the various different phases:
In the early phase, numerical simulation is applied, in order to give the automobile manufacturer preliminary information indicating whether or not the vehicle concept and the package will meet the requirements. In the course of the project, with the help of simulation, the selection and arrangement of the components will be optimized. Simulation presents the opportunity to test a great number of variables in a short space of time.
The purpose of realistic experiments is to correlate the progression of development to important mile-stones, as in the case for example of the release of tools. To do this, either slide or crash tests are relied upon.
The restraint system in crash tests and in adherence to different configurations will be judged at the conclusion of the development, and the corresponding releases will be distributed.
